Welcome to a new concept in Digital Photo Courses
The Institute of Photography/Digital Beginners are Ireland's only dedicated Digital Photography School. It was set up as a response to the need for specialised training in this exciting new area of photography. The explosion in Digital Camera ownership in Ireland in recent years means that many people are coming into digital photography with little or no formal training behind them. As a result we only teach digital photography, full stop.
Our school is built on the philosophy of keeping the technical concepts simple so that our students can find it easier to understand and remember the key principles of photography and digital camera usage.
A unique aspect of the Institute of Photography/Digital Beginners Courses are the specially produced handouts. All of our notes are written in plain English and are illustrated with full colour photographs and drawings to show you exactly what you need to know. The handouts have all been fine-tuned in a classroom setting, so that each of our tips are guaranteed to work in the real world.
As trainers we realise that the human brain can only take in a little information at a time. Our specially produced notes are a key way to extend the amount of knowledge our students can retain. Not only that, but days and weeks later it is still possible to continue the learning process by simply re-reading the handouts.
The Institute of Photography/Digital Beginners, keeping photography simple!
Night Courses
Each session of our Beginners and Improvers Night Courses are broken into 3 segments. The first segment is where homework set from the previous week is critiqued. If they wish students can even have their homework posted here on the the Institute of Photography/Digital Beginners web site. The second segment is based around a specific area of photography e.g. "8 tips for softer light" or "5 tips for better people shots".
The final segment is based around a few simple, but important, actions using the supplied photo editing software. Carefully worded and appropriately illustrated handouts are an integral part of both segments.
Week 6 of each of the Beginners and Improvers Night Courses is turned into a field trip out of doors, usually in the centre of Dublin City. Some of the shots taken on a previous Field Trip can be viewed as well.
Beginners Photography Night Course
The Beginners Photography Course is aimed at people who mainly used their digital camera on Auto, which is most of us. We gently bring you through the information you need to know on how to make your photographs better. The computer sided is based on very simple, but highly effective, software that can rescue and improve most photographs such as Removing Red Eye and Correcting a Dark Photograph.
Improvers Photography Course
Our Improvers Photography Course aims to build on their basic knowledge of photography. The computer side also goes deeper into photo manipulation, showing students how to clone, open closed eyes, create panoramas and collages, all with the free software provided.
Image Editing for Beginners
Photoshop is the 800 pound gorilla of the image editing world. It is big, it is capable of wonderful things but it is quite confusing. Where do you start? How do you get rid of skin blemishes? How do you put a new sky in? All these and more are dealt with in our Image Editing for Beginners Course. The modules are designed on a project basis to help you understand the bits you need, when you need them. The course is broken into 4 separate sections; the first deals with checking that your images are up to scratch and if not we show you how to correct them either individually or all at once; the second brings you through the techniques needed to improve your people shots; the third deals with landscapes while the fourth delves into creating collages and posters, including how to make up spoof magazine covers of the likes of Hello magazine.
Weekend Courses
A Beginners Photography Weekend, an Improvers Photography Weekend and an Advanced Photography Weekend Course is also available along with a Photoshop for Beginners Weekend and a Beginners Photographic Studio Weekend. These courses are aimed specifically at people who find it hard to devote 8 weeks in a row to a night course. While based on the same modules used in our Night Courses, a important part of these Weekend Courses is the field trips undertaken each day and the positive critiquing of these photos on immediate return to base.
Experienced Tutors
The tutors at the Institute of Photography/Digital Beginners know exactly what they are talking about. Not only have they long experience in teaching Digital Photo and Photo Software Courses, but are professionals in each of the areas they tutor in. They also have buckets of patience and good humour to boot!
