May Rating List

The ICU has released the May Rating List.

Of particular note is Justin managing to improve his 1821 and Cormac continuing to rise.

With Anton, Tom and Vincent within 25 points of each other the fight to get on the bottom armstrong boards is really putting extra zest into the club champs.

Posted by: whala on 05/07/2008 09:28 (Read: 123)
Its that time of year again when the women take their chidren in doors and the old put out wreaths of flowers to remember the fallen of previous years.

IT IS THE CLUB CHAMPS...

The first round draw is
Bd Name Versus Name

1 FRANK Mc MAHON : VINCENT BISSETT
2 ANTHONY WHALLEY : PAUL REILLY
3 PAUL TAAFFE : CORMAC ROCHE
4 JOHN SHEARAN : GERARD SMITH
5 KEVIN Mc GRANE : SHAY SCOTT
6 VINCENT DONNELLY : GERARD BUCKLEY
7 TOM O' SULLIVAN : TOBIAS MOLDT

All eyes for this round will be on Vincent "The Hacker" Bisset as he takes on "The Master" in their first serious game. The big question is can Vincent flare up his usual bag of complications or will Frank pour oil on the water.

New turn based chess server

Posted by: whala on 04/30/2008 08:31
This web site now has its own turn based chess server!
GO TO IT HERE
After much talk of red hot pawn I decided we should utilise the space we have so...
sign up and get involved.

It is open to all at the moment but I may restrict it to paying members and invited guests if the traffic gets to much.

Any suggestions on enhancements would be nice.

Lewis Chess History

Posted by: whala on 02/05/2008 12:38
A Link about the history of the lewis chess men. With an interesting note that they could have been on there way to Dublin.

While we are on games from the Norse here is a link to a Fidchell player..
The aim of the game is to work your king to safety at the edge of the board while dodging your opponents pieces.

(An approach not dissimilar to the way Paul Reilly plays modern chess).

Here is what WIKI has to say about Fidchell.

End Game Studies

Posted by: whala on 12/26/2005 10:55 (Read: 533)
Having lost to many games to count on the playchess server due to bad end game knowledge I have decided to dedicate some time to the study of end game principles. The upshot is that I have created chessbase tutorial packages to help me and I am making these available on the site for those that have either lost the will to live or like myself find endgames some thing they have to look at.

Paul Taffe has supplied the goodies again so we can all enjoy the misfortunes of others.

Paul Reillys finish in game one is particularly attractive and speaks volumes on his approach to the game.

Please use the comments section associated with this announcement to discuss any thoughts on the games.
