Here are the CLUB COMPETITION RULES for those taking part in the coming years competitions

CLUB COMPETITION RULES

The Club holds a number of competitions during the year with the objective of improving the overall quality of photography within the club.  For the purpose of club competitions members are divided into 3 sections: Novice, Intermediate and Advanced.  New members to the club are required to present a selection of their images (between 3 and 6) when they join in order that they can be placed in the appropriate section.  All members are assigned a membership number in the format PXXX where XXX is their number.

Monthly Competitions:

There are 7 monthly competitions, comprising 2 parts each month - a "Theme" and an "Open" competition.  A member may submit up to 2 entries in each part (i.e. a member may enter up to 2 images for the “Open” and up to 2 images for the “Theme” section). Images used in competition must not have been previously used in any other monthly competition over the years.  Judges from outside the club will score the entries out of 50 points. The following scoring guidelines will be given to the judge for each part:

Open

Theme

15: for composition

15: for composition

15: for interest/impact

15: for meeting the theme

10: for appropriate focus

10: for lighting

Each month the medium used changes between the following three formats:

Colour Print, Monochrome Print and Projected Image (colour).
Projected Image can be either a slide (35mm film) or a digitally projected image.  For the year 2008-09 there will be 3 Colour Print, 2 Monochrome Print and 2 Projected Image competitions.

Novice / Intermediate / Advanced photographer of the year:

The Club runs a Photographer of the Year Competition for each section – Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. This award goes to the photographer who has the highest score from participating in the Monthly Competitions - a type of League. Only the 5 best “theme” scores and the 5 best “open” scores from the 7 monthly competitions count for the award. (Only one score from each competition part in a given month can be used). A member must retain at least one monochrome, one colour print and one projected image[1] entry in each part of "Theme" and "Open" to be eligible for Photographer of the Year. A member from the Intermediate or Novice Sections must advance to the next appropriate section if he/she wins Photographer of the Year.

PROMOTION

An Intermediate member must advance to the Advanced Section if he/she achieves 85% of the total scores available for the best 5 counting scores. (425/500)

A Novice member must advance to the Intermediate Section if he/she achieves 80% of the total scores available for the best 5 counting scores. (400/500)

The Competition Secretary, in consultation with the full committee, may use his/her discretion to promote members for any reason.

The 4 End of Year Competitions:

1. A Colour-Print Photographer of the Year Competition.
2. A Monochrome Photographer of the Year Competition.
3. A Projected Image1 Photographer of the Year Competition.

For each of the above competitions a member may submit a selection (panel/portfolio) of 5 images in each format.  None of these images may have been used in previous End of Year Competitions. There will be a different judge for each format. A member may enter one or all of the End of Year Competitions.

4. Image of the Year:

Each judge from the 3 competitions above will nominate their best image in each section- Colour Print, Monochrome Print and Projected Image. They will then agree a final Image of the Year from those. Any member not submitting images for the 3 End of Year competitions may submit an entry in each section for the Image of the Year.

[1] The committee has decided, with the adoption of the motion (AGM June 2008) to include projected images and slides in the same format, that, the spirit of the motion would be to amend all rules so that “projected image” should be understood wherever “slide” was previously used.
